HC Deb 25 February 1941 vol 369 cc368-9
61. Mr. Cocks

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food whether he is satisfied that the addition of calcium to bread will not be injurious to public health?

Major Lloyd George

I would refer my hon. Friend to the Reply on this subject which I gave on 19th February to my hon. Friend the Member for London University (Sir E. Graham-Little).

Mr. Cocks

Has the attention of the hon. and gallant Gentleman been drawn to an article in the "British Medical Journal" suggesting that calcium is injurious to health, especially in kidney trouble?

Major Lloyd George

I would like to call my hon. Friend's attention to a statement in the "British Medical Journal" which says exactly the opposite. It says that the country is suffering from a lack of calcium, and that it is likely to become more serious in war conditions if we cannot make it up. I shall be very glad to send my hon. Friend a copy of it.

Mr. Cocks

I view of the obvious conflict of medical evidence, will the Minister be very careful about this matter?
