HC Deb 19 February 1941 vol 369 c136
17. Mr. G. Strauss

asked the Undersecretary of State for the Colonies whether he will review the detention order of Mr. Bustamente in Jamaica; and what are the conditions of his detention?

Mr. George Hall

Mr. Bustamante's detention is a matter for the Governor of Jamaica, who has undertaken to keep his case under review. With regard to the second part of the Question, I would refer the hon. Member to the reply returned to a Question by the hon. Member for Consett (Mr. David Adams) on 6th November last, of which I am sending him a copy.

Mr. Strauss

Is it the case that release has been refused?

Mr. Hall

As my hon. Friend knows, the Governor of Jamaica is at present in this country. Consultations have taken place with the Governor, but he does not propose to release Mr. Bustamante from detention, in present circumstances.
