HC Deb 17 December 1941 vol 376 c1925
25. Sir W. Smithers

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of War Transport how many railway horseboxes were used to take horses to the National Hunt Meeting at Cheltenham on 13th December?

Colonel Llewellin

Four, Sir.

Sir W. Smithers

In view of the Prime Minister's appeal for a total effort in this total war, why does the Ministry allow this service, which can be of no use to the war effort?

Colonel Llewellin

I have made inquiries about this. No extra locomotives were required. These boxes were merely attached to other trains going to Cheltenham.

Sir W. Smithers

But on arrival how much petrol and other effort were expended to see the horses run?

Colonel Llewellin

I think they run without.
