HC Deb 11 December 1941 vol 376 cc1677-8
70. Captain Anstruther-Gray

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury how many young men of fighting age are at present studying at universities throughout the country, giving separate figures for England and Scotland; and whether he can give figures showing the professions for which they are studying?

Captain Crookshank

I am circulating in the OFFICIAL REPORT a table showing the approximate numbers of students in attendance at universities and university colleges in the autumn of 1941. Information as to the precise age-distribution of these students is not available, but it is known that in arts subjects a substantial proportion of the students now in attendance are below military age.

Sir Percy Harris

Is it not a fact that these young men are doing their preliminary military training at the universities?

Captain Crookshank

I should have to have notice of the Question. I am not really concerned in this matter.

Following is the table referred to:

Approximate numbers of students in attendance at Universities and University Colleges in the autumn of 1941:

England and Wales. Scotland. Total.
In Arts subjects 4,500 1,400 5,900
In Scientific, Technical and Medical subjects. 15,300 3,800 19,100
