HC Deb 11 December 1941 vol 376 c1680
74. Mr. Salt

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Supply whether he is aware that local authorities, who are making a survey of the iron railings which may be taken for scrap, are threatening to take drive gates and other essential protection against straying livestock which will cause great inconvenience to owners of cattle liable to effect entry and considerable loss of garden vegetables, together with danger of such animals being poisoned from eating yew hedges; and will he instruct the authorities that it is not his intention that such should be the practice?

Mr. Harold Macmillan

Local authorities will not schedule for removal railings or gates which are required for enclosing cattle or to prevent them from straying, or railings which, if taken, would have to be replaced by some other material.
