HC Deb 11 December 1941 vol 376 cc1675-6
64. Sir T. Moore

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether it is proposed to freeze the credits in this country of those Britons living abroad?

The Chancellor of the Exchequer (Sir Kingsley Wood)

By an Amendment to the Defence (Finance) Regulations, dated nth November, 1941, the Treasury were empowered to block the accounts of British nationals who were resident in the United Kingdom at the beginning of the war and are now outside the sterling area.

Sir T. Moore

Have these British subjects who are living abroad been compelled by my right hon. Friend to contribute through their pockets if they have refused to contribute otherwise?

Mr. Mander

Has any action been taken under the Regulations?

Sir K. Wood

Perhaps the hon. Member will put that Question down.

Dr. Russell Thomas

Does my right hon. Friend think that our citizens abroad should be treated more unfairly than Marshal Petain?
