HC Deb 02 December 1941 vol 376 cc998-9
40. Mr. Thorne

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Supply what would be the cost to take down the 30,000 posts of Belisha beacons in Britain, to be used for munitions?

The Joint Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Supply (Mr. Harold Macmillan)

There are some 64,000 Belisha beacon posts in the country. I regret that I am not yet in a position to give a precise estimate of the cost of removing them.

Mr. Thorne

Will the cost of taking them down compensate for their use as munitions?

Mr. Macmillan

That is one of the questions we are examining. I hope to be able to make a statement very shortly.

Mr. Cocks

Is it proposed to deprive the right hon. Member for Devonport (Mr. Hore-Belisha) of his last hope of immortality?
