HC Deb 02 December 1941 vol 376 c988
17. Mrs. Hardie

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether any steps are being taken to provide more hospital accommodation for maternity cases in view of the increase in maternal mortality in Scotland?

Mr. Johnston

In the past two years nearly 500 new maternity hospital beds have been made available. Nearly 100 further beds will shortly be provided in buildings at present in course of erection. I am advised, however, that shortage of beds is not a significant factor in the increase in maternal mortality.

Mrs. Hardie

Could not the Secretary of State do something to remove the prejudice in the minds of the women of Scotland against going to hospital, which is largely owing to the unsatisfactory accommodation provided? In view of the bad housing conditions in many districts, could he not do something to bring about some improvement?

Mr. Johnston

I will consider any suggestion.
