HC Deb 02 December 1941 vol 376 cc1004-5
52. Mr. Noel-Baker

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether the permission granted to Marshal Pétain to draw money from the United Kingdam has been granted to any other French citizens now resident in France, or in the Vichy Occupied French colonies?

Sir K. Wood

No such permission has been granted to any other French citizens resident in Metropolitan France or to the French Colonies to which the Trading with the Enemy Act has been applied.

Mr. Noel-Baker

Does my right hon. Friend think that the political record of Marshal P6tain justifies this very strange privilege?

Sir K. Wood

The reasons for the decision have been stated.

Mr. Cocks

Was this the decision of the Government or of the Foreign Office?

Sir K. Wood

It was a decision of the Government.
