HC Deb 05 August 1941 vol 373 cc1788-9
50. Mr. Pickthorn (for Sir H. Williams)

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what rate of Excise Duty per cwt. of sugar was collected during the year ended 31st March, 1941; and what subsidy was paid during the same period per cwt. of sugar?

Sir K. Wood

The Excise Duty on sugar is chargeable at tariff rates which vary with the polarisation of the sugar. During the year ended 31st March, 1941, this duty was charged at rates ranging from 10s.-10s. 7d. per cwt., oh sugar polarising between 88 and 89 degrees, to 16s. 3d. per cwt. on sugar polarising above 99 degrees. With regard to the second part of the Question, I would refer my hon. Friend to the answer I gave him on 22nd July last.
