HC Deb 05 August 1941 vol 373 c1790
60. Mr. David Adams

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of War Transport what measures for securing greater safety and comfort to occupants of lifeboats and rafts are to be made compulsory under the Merchant Shipping Acts; when these reforms will begin; and when the new requirements for individual vessels are to be completed?

The Joint Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of War Transport (Colonel Llewellin)

Much has been done in this respect, and much is being done. I am sending a note on the subject to my hon. Friend, and as I know other Members also are interested, I am arranging for two or three copies of the note to be placed in the Library of the House.

Mr. Adams

How will this affect the individual vessel?

Colonel Llewellin

That depends very largely upon the supply question. Orders have been given, but we shall not make them compulsory until we are sure that there are adequate supplies.
