HC Deb 03 April 1941 vol 370 cc1165-6
60. Miss Rathbone

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he will give figures showing the amount of tobacco imported and the value of the retail sales of tobacco during the last four six-monthly periods for which such figures are available?

The President of the Board of Trade (Mr. Lyttelton)

The latest figures that can be published regarding imports of tobacco relate to the year 1939. In the first and second half years of 1938 and 1939, total imports of tobacco into the United Kingdom amounted successively to 125.8, 220.3, 97.9 and 114.7 million lbs. Corresponding information about the value of retail sales is not available.

Miss Rathbone

Is the Minister satisfied that the imports are decreasing and are not putting an undue burden upon our shipping facilities?

Mr. Lyttelton

Yes, Sir.
