HC Deb 03 April 1941 vol 370 cc1156-7
36. Mr. Rostron Duckworth

asked the Minister of Health whether he is aware that many local authorities, even in districts which are subject to enemy action, are insisting upon alterations in property which, while desirable in peace-time, are onerous when all money, materials and labour must be devoted to the war; and whether he will consider instructing local authorities to suspend such activities for the duration of the war?

Mr. E. Brown

I have no reason to believe that local authorities, in the exercise of their powers in respect of existing houses, are not, in general, taking into account the special circumstances arising from the war, and I doubt whether it is necessary or desirable for me at present to take the course suggested by my hon. Friend. But I will gladly take up with the local authority concerned any case which he may bring to my notice.
