HC Deb 05 September 1940 vol 365 c16
29. Mr. David Adams

asked the Minister of Shipping the progress made in the provision of motor lifeboats to vessels of the merchant navy?

The Minister of Shipping (Mr. Cross)

Yes, Sir. Motor lifeboats are being fitted on all merchant ships of 500 tons gross or over under construction on Government account, and I am advised that, of the ships now under construction for private shipowners, about one-third are being so fitted.

Mr. Adams

What is the position with regard to second-hand tonnage?

Mr. Cross

Owing to shortage of supply and labour in general, it is not possible to do more than I have already described in my answer.
