HC Deb 05 September 1940 vol 365 cc11-2
Mr. Speaker

An air-raid warning has been given. [HON. MEMBERS: "Carry on."] I understand that an arrangement has been made whereby the Air Ministry will inform the House when the raid is more imminent. In view of that fact, I think the House can continue its proceedings now.

Later—

Captain Markham

On a point of Order. With regard to air raids, I understand that the public galleries have been cleared. May that not be reconsidered in view of the fact that many of those attending Parliament in these days would much prefer to carry on in the Gallery rather than be shepherded to shelters?

Mr. Speaker

The question has been very carefully considered, and we came to the conclusion that it would be best in the interests of the visitors themselves that, on a red raid warning being given, the public galleries should be closed.

Mr. Markham

Could it not be revised and left to the discretion of the visitors?

Mr. Denville

You do not close the theatres of the country and turn the audiences out.
