59. Mr. Rostron Duckworthasked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food whether his attention has been called to the high prices charged for vegetables despite the abnormal production in this country during the past summer; and whether, in 1941, he will ensure better means of preserving surplus vegetables so as to avoid any repetition of the high prices which now exist?
Major Lloyd GeorgeHaving regard to the circumstances prevailing this summer, I cannot agree with my hon. Friend that the prices charged for most vegetables have been, or are, unduly high. In regard to the latter part of the Question, I can assure my hon. Friend that consideration is being given to the possibility of devising more effective means by preservation and otherwise of reducing the risk of wastage of fresh vegetables.
§ Mr. BellengerMay I ask whether the hon. and gallant Gentleman himself has been to retail shops and tried to buy vegetables, and, if not, would he consult his wife and get her opinion as to whether she thinks the prices are unduly high?
