HC Deb 24 October 1940 vol 365 c1118
2. Mr. Mainwaring

asked the Minister of Labour whether the colour bar, which now operates as a distinction against certain British subjects of mixed parentage, born and resident in this country, in their search for work at Government factories, is being used with his knowledge and consent; and will he take steps to see to it that all citizens without distinction of colour enjoy equal rights in this respect?

Mr. Bevin

I am not aware that such a distinction operates. Certain cases relating to a Royal Ordnance Factory were brought to my notice by my hon. Friend the Member for Aberavon (Mr. Cove), but I am informed by my right hon. Friend the Minister of Supply that they were due to a local misunderstanding which has now been corrected.

Mr. Mainwaring

Will the right hon. Gentleman inquire into a case where I have had official acknowledgment from an Employment Exchange that this, in fact, operates?

Mr. Bevin

I shall be very glad to do so if the hon. Member will send me a copy.
