HC Deb 22 October 1940 vol 365 c920
4. Mr. Liddall (for Mr. Rostron Duckworth)

asked the Secretary of State for War whether, taking the billeting charges for soldiers which are officially issued, he will give a few typical menus indicating how householders are expected to provide, for the sums mentioned, the food required by adult men?

Mr. Law

I do not think the issue of typical menus would serve any useful purpose. The scale of meals on which the payment made is based appears in the Second Schedule to the Army Act, and the cost of that scale is covered by the payment made. The scale can be varied, so as to meet the requirements of national rationing or other circumstances, so long as substantial equivalence is secured.
