HC Deb 17 October 1940 vol 365 c815
14. Mr. G. Strauss

asked the Home Secretary how many private air-raid shelters in large business blocks have been made available to the public for night use during the last fortnight?

Mr. H. Morrison

I am not in a position at the moment to supply this information. Local authorities have, however, already been asked to submit returns, at weekly intervals, which will include information on the point my hon. Friend has in mind. The first returns will be received this week, and I will let my hon. Friend have the particulars for which he asks as soon as they are available.

Mr. Strauss

Is the right hon. Gentleman satisfied that the authorities are doing all they should do in taking over these private shelters?

Mr. Morrison

I dealt with this in my speech, and I am seeking additional powers in order that the process may be further accelerated. It would not be desirable to publish detailed information about shelters, but the hon. Member may be sure that I am pressing on with all possible vigour.

Mr. Noel-Baker

Is the right hon. Gentleman considering the strengthening of shelters in such buildings as these?

Mr. Morrison

Yes, in appropriate cases.
