HC Deb 16 October 1940 vol 365 c702
52. Mr. Price

asked the Minister of Supply whether he will consider permitting the sale of wire netting for tree planting to woodland owners in proportion to the acreage which they undertake to plant?

The Minister of Supply (Sir Andrew Duncan)

Demands for wire netting for defence purposes and for protection of glass windows and roofs of factories are such that only a limited quantity of wire netting is available for the protection of private woodlands. The Board of Trade are responsible for the allocation of steel for this purpose and have made arrangements for the Forestry Commission to administer the quota on their behalf through the recognised forestry and analogous societies. In making allocations the Commission will take into consideration the acreage which each woodland owner undertakes to plant.

Mr. Price

Does that mean that woodlands other than those owned by the Forestry Commission may also get an allocation?

Sir A. Duncan

Yes, Sir.
