HC Deb 16 October 1940 vol 365 cc686-7
21. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he is aware that 6d. popular hooks on India and selected extracts from the OFFICIAL REPORT have been forbidden importation into the West Indies; and whether he will take steps to secure the removal of the ban on publications freely purchased in this country?

The Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies (Mr. George Hall)

I have no information that the importation of any such books has been prohibited in West Indian Colonies. If my hon. Friend will send me particulars of the instances he has in mind, inquiries will be made of the Colonial Governments concerned.

Mr. Sorensen

May I take it that my hon. Friend feels that if a "Penguin" book can be published and read in this country it should be possible for it to be published and read in the West Indies, and that there should be no discrimination between this country and the West Indies?

Mr. Hall

I know of no such discrimination. If my hon. Friend knows of any, perhaps he will give me particulars.
