HC Deb 16 October 1940 vol 365 cc694-5
65. Mr. Glenvil Hall

asked the Home Secretary whether he is now in a position to answer the letter, dated 13th August last, from the hon. Member for the Colne Valley on the case of Dr. Neuwahl?

Mr. Peake

The necessary inquiries in this case have not yet been completed, but my right hon. Friend hopes to communicate with my hon. Friend at an early date.

66. Mr. Glenvil Hall

asked the Home Secretary whether he is now in a position to answer the letter, dated 15th August last, from the hon. Member for the Colne Valley on the case of Mr. Roose, No. 17487?

Mr. Peake

This was a case in which my right hon. Friend was not in a position to reply until inquiries had been completed. A communication was sent to him on 9th October informing him that the release of this man has been authorised.

67. Major Milner

asked the Home Secretary what recommendations have so far been made by the Asquith Committee on questions relating to aliens; and which of such recommendations have been accepted and put into force and which refused?

Mr. Peake

The recommendations made by the Asquith Committee which relate to categories of eligibility for release from internment have been accepted, and have either been embodied in the White Paper published in August or are being incorporated in the revised edition of the White Paper which will be presented to Parliament this week. One such recommendation is outstanding, in regard to which my right hon. Friend is in communication with the Committee.

Major Milner

Do I understand that with one exception all the recommendations have been accepted?

Mr. Peake

Yes, Sir. All those made so far, with the exception of one, which is still subject to discussion between the Home Office and the Asquith Committee.
