HC Deb 08 October 1940 vol 365 cc255-6
74. Mr. R. Gibson

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury whether he will assure the House that it is the Government's intention to continue payment in Canada of pensions awarded under the widows', orphans' and old age contributory pensions?

The Financial Secretary to the Treasury (Captain Crookshank)

If the recipient of such a pension is already in Canada, payment will continue to be made. As regards individuals in this country, the practice is that an exit permit, except for business reasons, is not granted unless a declaration has been signed that no application to transfer funds outside the sterling area will be made.

Mr. Gibson

Is the right hon. and gallant Gentleman keeping in mind the case of mothers and children who are being evacuated? What is the position in regard to them?

Captain Crookshank

I am not aware that any mothers and children are being evacuated at the present time. Perhaps the hon. and learned Gentleman will put that question down.

Mr. Bevan

If mothers with children want to be evacuated, ought they not to be allowed to receive their pensions? That surely is a stupid regulation. Cannot we have an answer? The right hon. and gallant Gentleman is always fending, and never gives a reply to a supplementary.
