HC Deb 20 November 1940 vol 365 c1986
57. Mr. Tinker

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food whether he will give consideration to extending the subsidies to other essential food requirements to such as butter, etc., as many of the people on small incomes, and old age pensioners, are unable to buy their ration and a reduced price would place things on a more equal footing and enable all to get full benefit of what supplies we have?

Major Lloyd George

No, Sir. My Noble Friend's policy is to ensure that a sufficient supply of essential foods is available at prices within the reach of all consumers. Butter in time of war can be replaced by margarine, which provides an alternative foodstuff of high quality at a much lower price.

Mr. Tinker

Is the hon. and gallant Gentleman aware that many people are not getting their rations because of the price? I want to know what steps are to be taken to see that everybody gets the quotas to which they are entitled.

Major Lloyd George

Is my hon. Friend talking about margarine?

Mr. Tinker

I am speaking about butter and margarine.

Major Lloyd George

If my hon. Friend will bring cases to my notice, I shall be glad to look into them.
