HC Deb 20 November 1940 vol 365 c1980
47. Mr. Doland

asked the Minister of Supply whether he will indicate the result of salvage work for each Metropolitan borough and for the large cities outside London, respectively, for the months of August, September and October, 1940, giving the population in each instance; and will he also intimate whether each Metropolitan borough is doing all that can be done in this direction?

Sir A. Duncan

As regards the first part of the Question, I would refer my hon. Friend to the replies given to the hon. and learned Member for East Leicester (Mr. Lyons), on 8th October and 13th November, 1940, respectively. The value of waste material sold by local authorities and returned to industry during September showed some decline on the previous month, particularly in the case of the Metropolitan boroughs. This was due principally to certain urgent additional duties which have recently been imposed upon many of the Metropolitan boroughs and partly also to temporary interruption of markets. The Salvage Department of the Ministry is, however, in constant touch with the Councils to ensure that everything possible is being done to maintain and extend their salvage work.
