HC Deb 20 November 1940 vol 365 c1968
27. Mr. R. Gibson

asked the Minister of Information whether he is aware that great difficulty is experienced in Scotland in receiving the Home Service programmes transmitted by the British Broadcasting Corporation; and whether he will take steps to have the wave-length on which these are transmitted altered to overcome this difficulty?

The Minister of Information (Mr. Duff Cooper)

The answer to the first part of the Question is in the affirmative, but the cause of the difficulty is not the wavelength. The transmitters when in operation are adequate, but they have to go out of operation in whole or in part from time to time for security reasons determined by the Air Ministry.

Mr. Gibson

Will the right hon. Gentleman look into the matter a little more carefully as far as certain areas in Scotland are concerned, as I am informed that in some areas there are difficulties even in normal times, apart from the times when the intensity of the waves is diminished for security reasons?

Mr. Cooper

I will look into the matter and see whether anything can be done.
