HC Deb 20 November 1940 vol 365 cc1953-4
3. Mr. Mander

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether all the Allies associated with us in the present struggle are at war with both Germany and Italy; and, if not, what exceptions exist, and for what reasons?

The Under-Seeretary of State for Foreign Affairs (Mr. Butler)

The formal situation at present is that Poland, Norway, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxemburg and the Provisional Czechoslovak Government are at war with Germany, and that Greece is at war with Italy. The hon. Member will realise that this situation arises out of the acts of aggression inflicted upon each of the Allies by one or other, though in no case by both, of our enemies, but my Noble Friend is not prepared to give explanations of the policies of the independent Governments of our Allies.

Mr. Mander

While I quite appreciate how the matter arises, would it not be desirable now that it should be regularised, and that all the Allies should stand together against the same two enernies—Germany and Italy?

Mr. Butler

I am not prepared to go further than I did in my statement, and I am quite satisfied of tie resolution of the policy of our Allies.

Mr. Minder

Against both?
