HC Deb 19 November 1940 vol 365 c1815
29. Mr. Vernon Bartlett

asked the Secretary for Petroleum whether he can yet report on the value of oil and cement to be obtained from shale at Kilve and East Quantoxhead in Somerset?

The Secretary for Petroleum (Mr. Geoffrey Lloyd)

An investigation of these oil shales has recently been carried out by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, but it would not be in the public interest to make a statement about the results. I should be glad, however, to discuss the matter with the hon. Member.

Mr. Shinwell

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that there was an inquiry in 1924 into the prospects of oil deposits from shale in Somerset? Is the Mines Department still dilly-dallying?

Mr. Lloyd

No, Sir, this is another investigation.

Mr. Shinwell

Is my hon. Friend aware that at the inquiry, more than 16 years ago, this subject was explored and its reports sent to his Department? Why another inquiry?

Mr. Lloyd

That inquiry was not considered satisfactory, and it is desired to go more thoroughly into the matter.
