HC Deb 19 November 1940 vol 365 cc1826-7
44. Mr. Davidson

asked the Home Secretary whether he has taken steps to secure assurances regarding the loyalty to this country of Prince Bandini, an Italian, in view of the fact that he bears in Scotland the title of Earl of Newburgh?

Mr. Peake

I understand that the Earldom of Newburgh passed to an Italian family a hundred years ago, and the present holder of the title is an Italian subject resident in Italy. No public purposes would be served by taking any such steps as are suggested.

Mr. Davidson

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that very severe steps have been taken against many friendly Italians in this country, and does the Government intend to take no step with regard to an enemy alien, resident in Italy, holding a Scottish title?

Mr. Isaacs

Has this enemy person the right to sit in the House of Lords and vote there?
