66. Mr. Lyons

asked the Home Secretary whether his attention has been called to the establishment of neighbours' leagues in the city of Leicester and elsewhere; and what steps are being taken to provide essential equipment to supplement that which has been acquired by door to door collections and other voluntary effort so that this work of mutual assistance may be made as effective as possible?

Mr. Mabane

Arrangements have already been made for stirrup pumps to be available for groups such as these. Perhaps my hon. and learned Friend will inform me what other articles of equipment he has in mind.

Mr. Lyons

Will the Ministry see that, if they approve of these leagues, steps will be taken by the Department to help local authorities to improve them where they are now in existence?

Mr. Mebane

In many parts of the country they have been in existence and have been gladly encouraged by local authorities.

Mr. Lyons

I was asking whether the Department will help them to be more widespread.

Mr. Mabane

That is desirable.
