HC Deb 05 November 1940 vol 365 cc1190-1
39. Mr. Wedgwood

asked the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs what is being done with regard to the offer of the Government of Eire to take the Irish mothers and children refugees from Liverpool and to keep and educate them?

The Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs (Viscount Cranborne)

As I informed my hon. Friend the Member for Oxford University (Mr. Herbert) on 22nd October, this matter is at present under active examination by the two Governments and I understand that good progress is being made. I am not aware of any offer which applies specifically to mothers and children from Liverpool, though, as an evacuation area, Liverpool will, of course, be included in the arrangements which are under discussion.

Mr. Wedgwood

Are the Eire Government looking at this matter from the point of view of humanity or of good business?

Viscount Cranborne

I believe they are looking at it entirely from the point of view of humanity.
