HC Deb 28 May 1940 vol 361 c414
51. Mr. Rhys Davies

asked the Chanchellor of the Exchequer what steps he is taking to ensure that it will be possible at the end of the war to distinguish between profits and income arising out of, and because of, the national emergency on the one hand and other profits and incomes?

The Chancellor of the Exchequer (Sir Kingsley Wood)

I assume that my hon. Friend has in mind the post-war taxation of increases of wealth and I would refer him to what my predecessor said on this subject in his Budget Speech. It is not considered necessary to take any steps during the war in anticipation of what Parliament may determine to do thereafter.

Mr. Davies

May we take it that the right hon. Gentleman is keeping his eye on the war profiteers?
