HC Deb 28 May 1940 vol 361 cc392-3
11. Dr. Edith Summerskill

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he has now decided to include women specialists in the medical services for the care and treatment of women auxiliaries?

Mr. Law

It is not considered necessary to appoint women specialists in the medical service of the Army for the specific duty of treating women auxiliaries, in addition to the specialists already available. Women doctors employed in the Army are eligible for specialist appointments.

Dr. Summerskill

Could the hon. Gentleman give any reason for the discrimination against women?

Mr. Law

I do not think there is any discrimination against women as such. It is the purpose of the authorities to get the best available medical attendance for members of the Forces, irrespective of sex.

Dr. Summerskill

May I ask whether there is any prejudice against women in the Army?

Mr. Law

I am sure there is no prejudice.
