HC Deb 28 May 1940 vol 361 cc397-8
22. Mr. Higgs

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he is aware that duralumin suits are reported to have been worn by the Germans at the beginning of the present war; and will he consider providing the troops in the trenches with armour-plating for the chest, or other similar protection?

Mr. Law

There have been rumours that light armour is sometimes worn by the Germans, but these rumours are entirely unconfirmed. The provision of chest armour for British troops has already been considered and experiments have been carried out.

Mr. Higgs

Is the hon. Member aware that head protection is considered necessary, and does he not consider that the body is more vulnerable?

Mr. Law

I may say that experiments have been carried out, but it would not be in the public interest to disclose the result.
