HC Deb 28 May 1940 vol 361 c404
19. Mr. Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he will consider the desirability of arming the men of all home service anti-aircraft batteries with rifles or other suitable weapons as a protection against attack by parachute troops or enemy agents operating in this country?

Mr. Law

Suitable provision for this purpose has been made in the case of these batteries.

Mr. Shinwell

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that in many cases members of anti-aircraft batteries have had little or no training in the use of a rifle? Is it not desirable that they should? Do I understand that arrangements are being made to institute rifle practice at once?

Mr. Law

Yes, Sir. Arrangements are being made and will be continuous to give anti-aircraft batteries all the practice desirable.

Mr. Glenvil Hall

May I ask whether proper safeguards will be taken to see that rifles and ammunition do not get into the wrong hands?

Mr. Law

Yes, Sir. All possible steps will be taken.
