HC Deb 22 May 1940 vol 361 cc131-2
12. Major Carver

asked the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies what financial contribution towards the national effort has been made by the people of Gibraltar?

Mr. George Hall

I am glad to have this opportunity of informing the House that a sum of £30,007 has been raised by voluntary subscription in Gibraltar as a contribution to war expenses. Hon. Members will agree that this contribution affords striking evidence of the loyalty of a Colony whose population numbers less than 20,000 persons. The Governor has been asked to convey to the people of the Colony the warm appreciation of His Majesty's Government of their generous gift and of the spirit which prompted it.
