HC Deb 01 May 1940 vol 360 c709
46. Mr. De le Bère

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food whether he will give an assurance that he will not sanction an increase in the price of bread to the consumer for the period up to the 30th June, 1940?

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food (Mr. Lennox-Boyd)

I would refer my hon. Friend to the answer which was given to him on 14th February in reply to a similar Question.

Mr. De la Bère

Is my hon. Friend aware that in three months prior to the outbreak of the war the prices of wheat and flour were the lowest recorded for 300 years, and that the price of flour and bread did not fall correspondingly; and why, when the price of flour is fixed now, should the price of bread be put up? Is it not true that he is contemplating doing it? Why not be frank with us? Am I not entitled to an answer?

Mr. Speaker

If the hon. Member will put his Supplementary Question in an ordinary common-sense way he will get an answer.
