HC Deb 19 March 1940 vol 358 cc1819-20
85. Mr. MacLaren

asked the Minister of Supply whether the Government intend to standardise certain woollen cloths; and, if so, whether he will introduce a scheme for pooling all woollen fabrics in order to prevent a few persons who have had special knowledge or information cornering cloths other than standard cloths?

The Minister of Supply (Mr. Burgin)

The Government have under consideration the possibility of organising the production of certain woollen cloths at standard prices. Any such arrangement could not come into operation for some time after the decision to introduce it, and I see no reason to contemplate that it will have any such effect as the hon. Member suggests.

Mr. MacLaren

Will the Minister take special precautions to see that there is no attempt on the part of private persons to form any pool in cloths?

Mr. Burgin

Yes, Sir.

Mr. Holdsworth

Before making a decision, will the right hon. Gentleman consult those engaged in the trade?

Mr. Burgin

Yes, Sir.
