§ 32. Mr. R. Gibsonasked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he is aware that the number of men unemployed in the building industry in the Greenock area rose from 162, on15th January, 1940, to 265 on 12th February, 1940, bringing the percentage unemployed in this industry up to 17.2; on how many houses in corporation housing schemes in the area building has ceased, and for what causes; and what proposals he has to bring these 265 men into productive employment?
§ Mr. ColvilleI am aware that unemployment in the building industry rose in Greenock in February, as it did elsewhere, owing to very severe weather conditions. Building operations are again proceeding on all the 506 houses in course of erection in the corporation's schemes. I hope that this work and Government building work in Scotland will absorb increasing numbers of building operatives still unemployed.
§ Mr. GibsonThe right hon. Gentleman says 506 houses, and my information is 689 houses; does he mean by his answer that the building of 183 of the houses has ceased?
§ Mr. ColvilleI would like to look into that question. My information is that 506 houses are proceeding, and these should give a good deal of employment.
