HC Deb 19 March 1940 vol 358 c1791
27. Mr. Maxton

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he is aware that 28 new houses in Dundee built for slum-clearance purposes, and urgently needed for that purpose, have been taken over for the purpose of billeting soldiers; whether this is a temporary arrangement; and whether more suitable alternative accommodation will be found in that area?

Mr. Stanley

I am informed that it was necessary to take these houses because no other suitable accommodation is available, and that the agreement of the local civil authorities was obtained.

Mr. Maxton

Is this a temporary arrangement, or is it likely to continue for some period?

Mr. Stanley

I cannot, of course, answer that question definitely. I think it is likely to continue for some period. I cannot hold out any hope that while it is necessary, for military purposes, that those soldiers should be there, there is any other accommodation which would be suitable.

Mr. Denville

Has anyone in the district complained about it?
