HC Deb 14 March 1940 vol 358 cc1336-7
15. Mr. Riley

asked the Minister of Labour whether it is intended to discontinue the work of the Commissioner for the Special Areas; and, if so, when and whether it is intended to make provision for the continuation of the social services, and particularly, the erection and support of nursery schools in these areas when the present arrangement terminates?

Mr. E. Brown

I have nothing to add to the statement I made on 12th December, 1939, when moving an Amendment to the Expiring Laws (Continuance) Bill to provide for continuation of the Special Areas Acts. In the circumstances the last part of the Question does not arise.

Mr. Riley

Will the assistance promised to the Save the Children Fund to provide nursery schools in the distressed areas now be implemented?

Mr. Brown

I will send the hon. Member the passage from my speech, and perhaps he will communicate with me on particular points of that kind.
