HC Deb 14 March 1940 vol 358 cc1343-4
18. Mr. Adamson

asked the Minister of labour whether he is now able to make a statement on the subject of seamen's welfare in port?

Mr. E. Brown

I am in course of consultation with the Departments concerned and other interests on the subject of the method of co-ordinating action in respect of the various ports.

Mr. Adamson

Can the right hon. Gentleman give me any idea when a conclusion will be reached?

Mr. Brown

We shall come to a conclusion as soon as we can. We are meeting representatives of the shipowners and the men.

Mr. R. Gibson

Will the right hon. Gentleman see that buildings erected and used for welfare purposes are not diverted to other purposes, such as sleeping accommodation for naval ratings?

Mr. Brown

I hope the hon. and learned Member will not prejudice the discussions. When I said "interests," I had all these things in mind.

Mr. Glenvil Hall

Can the discussions be expedited?

Mr. Brown

We shall bring them to a satisfactory conclusion at the earliest possible date.
