HC Deb 14 March 1940 vol 358 c1336
13. Mr. Ellis Smith

asked the Minister of Labour whether reasonable preference is being given, where practicable, to people resident in the North Staffordshire area, who are unemployed and who desire to be employed on contracts being carried out for the Government?

Mr. E. Brown

The general practice in selecting applicants to fill vacancies notified to Employment Exchanges is to give preference to suitable unemployed applicants living in the area where the work is situated or within daily travelling distance. I have no doubt that this practice is being followed in the North Staffordshire area.
