§ 1. Mr. Kirkwoodasked the Minister of Labour what is to be the position of the Glasgow Fair holidays this year; and whether it is intended to introduce a spread-over system?
§ 11. Mr. Robert Gibsonasked the Minister of Labour whether he has any statement to make regarding the spread-over of holidays in Scotland?
§ The Minister of Labour (Mr. Ernest Brown)I have no special information regarding the Glasgow Fair holidays. The method of arranging holidays is a matter for settlement in the light of local and industrial circumstances, and I have no intention of trying to regulate it in any stereotyped manner by central instructions.
§ Mr. KirkwoodIs the Minister prepared to use his influence to see that regular holidays are continued while war is on and that it will not always be a case of work, work, work?
§ Mr. BrownThe hon. Member may be sure that the experience of the last war will be fully borne in mind.
§ Mr. GibsonIn any spread-out arrangement will the right hon. Gentleman see that there is a spread in connection with school holidays and take that into account, so as to secure uniformity?
§ Mr. BrownThat was one of the points that the committee which discussed this 1334 matter had fully in mind. The position in Lancashire and Scotland has always been different from that which normally operates in England.
§ Sir Herbert WilliamsOn the occasion of the last Glasgow Fair, were there not so many people on the Central Station that they could not get away?
