HC Deb 14 March 1940 vol 358 cc1367-8
78. Sir A. Knox

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury whether all Departments of State started a war diary on the outbreak of war; and whether such diaries are still being kept?

The Financial Secretary to the Treasury (Captain Crookshank)

At the outbreak of war it was arranged that all Departments of State should make collections of the material which will be required for writing a history of the war. In the case of Departments most directly concerned with the conduct of the war, war diaries are being kept.

Sir A. Knox

Are war diaries being kept by all Departments?

Captain Crookshank

I said that they were being kept by those most directly concerned with the conduct of the war.
