HC Deb 14 March 1940 vol 358 cc1368-9
80. Mr. Salt

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury whether he is aware that the Bradford Permanent Building Society is calling in the mortgages granted to owner-occupiers in order to increase the rate of interest, thereby creating great hardship; and, since these contracts were completed before the country became involved in war, will he take steps to override this action?

Captain Crookshank

I would refer my hon. Friend to the answer I gave on 27th February to my hon. Friend the Member for the Moseley Division (Sir P. Hannon).

Sir P. Hannon

Would my right hon. and gallant Friend make some suggestion to this society, in the kindliest and gentlest way, that it should not press these poor people in this way?

Captain Strickland

Is my right hon. and gallant Friend aware of the great distress being caused to a number of working-class families who are buying their houses, by this action, which can only be described as force majeure?
