HC Deb 13 March 1940 vol 358 cc1187-8
47. Mr. Ness Edwards

asked the Minister of Food whether his attention has been drawn to an increasing practice in South Wales, whereby wholesale potato merchants are charging 1s. 8d. each for non-returnable potato bags; and what steps he proposes to take to stop this profiteering?

Mr. W. S. Morrison

Complaints of this practice were received some weeks ago, but, following conferences between the wholesale and retail interests concerned and the reduction in growers' prices after the recent frost, charges for the use of sacks have either been greatly reduced or have been abandoned, and no complaints are now being received. Complaints already received are being investigated and in one case legal proceedings have been instituted. If the hon. Member will be good enough to furnish me with particulars of the cases referred to, I will have them investigated also.

Mr. Edwards

Has not the right hon. Gentleman yet received the communications which I sent to him?

Mr. Morrison

Yes, Sir, I have received them, and if these are the same cases, they are being investigated. I thought the hon. Member's Question might possibly refer to other cases.
