HC Deb 13 March 1940 vol 358 c1195
72. Mr. T. Williams

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies how many leading members of the trades union movement in Palestine have been imprisoned or sent to concentration camps without trial during the last two weeks?

Mr. M. MacDonald

During the period in question, five members of the Mapai, the Labour party of Palestine, were arrested in Tel Aviv and ordered to be detained for a period of six months under Emergency Regulation 15B.

Mr. Williams

Are we to understand that the High Commissioner in Palestine is making a dead set against members of trade unions and the Labour party?

Mr. Shinwell

Is this the right hon. Gentleman's conception of democracy?
