HC Deb 12 March 1940 vol 358 c996
39. Mr. Banfield

asked the Secretary for Mines whether his attention has been called to the difficulty of bakers in getting supplies of suitable coke for certain types of ovens; and, in view of the importance of the bread supply, whether he will consider preparing a scheme whereby future regular supplies may be ensured?

Mr. Lloyd

The necessity for maintaining supplies of fuel suitable for bakers is already fully recognised by my local officers and by suppliers and distributors alike. No recent instances of difficulty have been brought to my notice.

Mr. Banfield

Will the hon. Gentleman bear in mind that coke from coal that has been used for the production of water gas is totally unsuitable for baking?
