HC Deb 07 March 1940 vol 358 c539
19. Mr. T. Smith

asked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware that the unemployed at Normanton have been informed that the winter allowances will not be paid after 1st March; and whether, in view of the hard winter and the increase in the cost of living, the allowance can be continued for a further period?

Mr. E. Brown

No, Sir. As stated in the Board's instruction to their officers, a copy of which was placed in the Library of the House last October, the last payment of winter allowances will be made during the calendar week ending 30th March.

Mr. Smith

Can the Minister say why the unemployed at Normanton were so informed?

Mr. Brown

I am not aware that they were so informed.
